Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club 1st XI v Newport I on Sat 06 May 2006 at 1.30
Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club Won by 131 runs
Match report
On an overcast day, that then turned to showers, Hall began their league campaign with a 131 run victory against Newport. Skipper Livings lost the toss and Hall were put into bat on a green wicket.
A minute’s silence was observed by both sides before the game commenced in memory of Stan Clark, and play began with Clappers and Bren opening up. Clappers made a good start, scoring a brisk 23, which brought the skip to the crease, whereas Bren was not his free scoring self as he was dropped three times on his was to 22 off 20 overs. Dawsy joined Ben at the crease at the fall of the second wicket, and the run rate started to increase. Dawsy playing an unselfish role, knocking off singles to allow Ben the strike, as he quickly reached his 50. Dawsy eventually went for 35 caught in the deep, and Keefey joined the fray for the last seven overs. Ben finished the innings on 143 not out in a chanceless knock that involved some brilliant strokeplay and 5 enormous sixes. Hall were 255-3 off of their 45 overs.
Emma Keefe’s tea was thoroughly enjoyed by all, and Hall took the field with drizzle in the air, which became a lot heavier at times.
An early break through from Hallsy got Hall off to a good start, and Willo also struck shortly after. With the weather worsening, the skippers met several times, but luckily for Hall, decided that play would continue. However Newport had made a quick start and were well ahead of the asking rate after 10 overs. The introduction of Dawsy and Glassy tightened Hall’s grip on the game with Glassy bowling a good line at a good pace to capture two wickets. Dawsy bowled an excellent spell from the top end and claimed 5 well deserved wickets by the end of Newport’s innings. Rob Snelling got a bit carried away when trying to join Dawsy in his celebrations, when trying to jump over the wicket, falling flat on his back, much to the amusement of the umpire and non striking batsman. Rob tried to carry on as though nothing had happened, but was rumbled later on. Hall also got a run out as the fielding was a huge improvement on the previous weeks poor display. Heathy was unlucky not to claim his second wicket since 1932 as two catches were put down off his bowling, but apart from that, a good display in the field. Newport were dismissed for 124 in the 28th over, and the rain started to chuck it down again shortly after.
