Bishop's Stortford III v Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 24 May 2008 at 1:30
Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club Won By 2 runs

Match report Hall travelled to local rivals Bishop's Stortford in the hope of maintaining their 100% record. Once again, a settled side was selected with Harv's efforts of the previous week not quite doing enough to earn him a 1st team place.

Hall batted first on a lively Stortford track, and things didn't get off to the best starts with the form batsmen Keefy and Livings falling without really troubling the scorers. The same happened with Dawsy who misjudged the bouncyness of the track before Jonesy and Baloo steadied the ship. Both scored important runs before Jonesy fell for 52. Willo and Wazza made their customary brief innings', as Hall's middle order and tail got their first outing of the season. Hall were in danger of falling well short of a challenging score, before Tayls started freeing his arms. Tayls dominated the attack dispatching the ball to all parts, and put this largely down to his early morning net where he learnt he can hit the ball a long way without slogging. Woody and Reggie supported Tayls admirably with Woody playing a sumptious cover drive that many at first thought was shot of the day. This was bettered by Tayls who clipped a huge six of his legs, much to the delight of those in the hutch. Tayls scored his first league 50 for the 1st team, and it couldn't have come at a better time, seeing Hall through to 240 for 9.

Tea came and went and Hall entered the field with an air of confidence after the end of the previous innings. Hall started fairly well but slowly became sluggish in the field. Willo claimed an early scalp and Wazza bowling at a good pace claimed the important wickets of S Smith and Drury, was Willo caught at 3rd man, taking one for the team. If only he had used his hands...ouch! Stortford were scoring at a good rate though and Hall failed to make a breakthrough for some time before Ralph came on to claim two wickets. Hall's fielding got increasingly worse as the afternoon went on with numerous players half asleep, as Stortford were gifted a number of easy boundaries. Golden came on and bowled tightly in the context of the game (yes that is not a typo), and claimed a wicket. But the game was nicely poised with Stortford well on top of the run rate and with wickets in hand. Hall then upped their game and Willo removed Wilkinson, but Hardcastle was still in and had long passed his 50. It was all too much for one Stortford umpire as he had to be replaced as the end was near. Last over...and 9 to win for Stortford with 3 wickets in hand. 16 year old Wazza stepped up to the plate, and bowled superbly, giving away only 6 runs, to allow Hall to win by 2 runs.
