All-Round Team Performance leads First XI to Victory

21 Apr 2018

Stansted Hall took the field following an unsuccessful toss from skipper Rory, which saw the Thaxted captain electing to bat, taking many by surprise. The old guard (Peter, and Dave) opened the bowling with tight spells from each, despite neither picking up any wickets. First change, Naz (4-26) attempted to get the break through, (and to give that new shoulder its first run out) but instead struggled to find his line and length consistently meanwhile, at the other end, Ollie put together a tidy spell, creating chances and testing the batsmen's outside edge. The introduction of Sam's spin, combined with Charlie's pace saw the Hall take a flurry of wickets with Sam ending his spell with 3 and Charlie with 2 (a good return after a few years out). Rory then brought himself and Jacob onto bowl, with the latter collecting 2 wickets off of his four overs. This allowed Kieran to turn his arm over for the first time in a while, before Dave took the final wicket (helped by some smart glove work by Will). Leaving Stansted Hall 150 runs to chase in 40 overs.

In reply, the openers (Kieran and Jacob) began cautiously watching the bounce carefully, which had proved to be fairly inconsistent all day, before Kieran was given out LBW for a classy 17 after playing across his pad, albeit if the ball was sliding down (at least that's what Kieran was saying). This departure brought in Rory who looked to go after the Thaxted attack, which worked momentarily before the introduction of a wily old spinner, who soon had Rory LBW for 19. Naz joined Jacob at the crease, who, by this point had began to look at home in the middle, before the latter reached his 50 and his retirement just after the drinks break (just in time for the FA cup semi-final), shortly followed by Naz who, in comparison, had raced his way to 50. The two new batsmen, Ollie and Will didn't last very long scoring 1 and 4 respectively, luckily though, there wasn't many runs left on the board at this point allowing Chalie (4*) and Sam (1*) to push the Hall over the finish line in the 28th over.

All in all a good team performance.
