Defeat in first round of the Davies cup for 1st XI

29 Jul 2020

Stansted Hall & Elsenham First XI fall well short of the 187 set by Rickling Ramblers CC to taste defeat for the first time this season.

On a slightly damp wicket, skipper J.Talbot elected to bowl first. The less said about the bowling performance, the better really, as Rickling got stuck into our opening attack, hitting the first four overs for 45, despite C.Turner picking up a wicket early on. The runs continued to flow for Rickling who saw themselves on 115 after 11. The Hall fought to regain control, as Rickling's opener was removed by O.Patmore after some brilliant work in the deep by H.Merrick. This was followed by G.Ward dismissing their no. 3 who had smashed his way to 89 off only 51 balls. The runs began to dry up a little for Rickling towards the back end of the innings, but the damage had already been done, leaving the Hall with 188 to win.

A make-shift opening partnership between R.McGurk (15) and skipper J.Talbot (56) set about trying to get us on the front foot. A task which they started reasonably well, getting 29 off the first 3 before R.McGurk was held out. J.Talbot was joined by H.Merrick (44) who took a liking to the leg side boundary, hitting three sixes during his stay at the crease, before eventually being caught at long-on. Despite occupying the crease for the majority of the innings, J.Talbot found it incredibly difficult to stop hitting it straight to fielders, putting pressure on the batsmen at the other end. As such, wickets continued to fall and the run rate continued to rise throughout the next few overs as we limped towards 138, 49 runs short of the target.
