Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club 2nd XI v Stansted II on Sat 20 May 2006 at 1.30
Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club Lost 6 runs
Match report
With the knowledge of bad weather to come and with a damp pitch, the Hall decided to field. We got off to a good start when a Mark C-Smith full toss removed one of the openers, but Keith Ayres started to hit out soon after and Spencer Prinn was brought into the attack to try and calm things down, which is just what he did, bowling very economically and picking up four good wickets. Nick Wrathall overcame a nervous start to finish with another set of good figures. Rob Holland replaced him from the pavilion end and had both bats playing and missing. However the rain started to come down and heavily. Patrick Hearne took on the role of chief ball drier and did a good job. Dutchy's last over went for 14 with 2 big sixes and this allowed Stansted to get closer to the 200 mark. Some tight bowling from Tony Brown and Andy Marshall ment Stansted didn't get quite as many as they would have hoped for.
With Tony and Kevin at the helm, the Hall's batting looked very solid. Tony raced to a superb 75 and it says a lot about how fast he was that Kevin was still only on 20 when Tony got bowled. Spencer came in and the two seemed to be guiding the 2s comfortably to our first win. It was a cruel twist of fait then that Joe Baker, a youth team player at the hall up till last year, produced a stunning spell that halted our innings, literally! Nick Wrathall kept us in contention with a smashed 4 over long-on but, needing 7 from the last over, Marshy's huge swings couldn't connect with the ball and the last over was a wicket maiden. Even now it is still hard to believe we didn't win!
