Colchester & East Essex v Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club Matchplay on Sun 08 May 2011 at 1pm
Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club Won 42 runs
Match report
Had to write a match report for this one as it will go down in SHECC Matchplay history. Batting first on the strip that was to be used for the Essex match in August we made a solid start as Tom & Joel took us to 35 in the 8th over. Tom played the ball onto his stumps when he looked set for a big innings and Joel then had the misfortune to run his skipper Rory out. Joel and Charlie took the score to 92 before both fell leaving us with 17 overs to bat to post a decent total. The two James(Fortune and Brown) steadied the ship with a stand of 52 the latter making the highest score of 31. Charlie T hit a rapid 20 at the end of the innings to set a competitive score of 174 off our 40 overs. The coaches half team talk of bowl a good line and length must of fell on deaf ears as after 2 overs Colchester found themselves 29 without loss. Luckily we managed to remove both openers with the score on 50 but the run rate was still over 6 an over. The drinks break could not of come sooner with the score on 112 for 2 with Charlie T and Rory bringing order to the proceedings with some accurate bowling. Rory had a few choice words for his team and asked them to give him everything they had got and go down fighting. And how they did. After the restart Joel held onto a rocket of a catch from their No3 batsmen who had just reached his 50 off the bowling of Rory. rory then cleaned bowled their No 4 batsmen who looked set on 25. What happend next with the score on 131 was utter chaos as Rory turned the screw with the introduction of the two leg spinners Joel and James B. First a suicidal run out as one batsmen lapped the other as they attempted a third run was followed by a double wicket maiden from James with two in two balls as Tom behind the stumps took a great stumping. Then in the next over the batsmen came down the pitch to Joel only to hit the ball staright back to him. Without thinking Joel threw the ball back to Tom who ran him out before he could get back in his crease. Two balls later it was all over as Joel took the final two wickets. Unbelievable. 6 wickets for 0 runs in 2 overs. Will we ever see such a turnaround again in matchplay history. I doubt it. Well done boys you thoroughly deserved it the way you came back out after the tea break after you looked dead and buried.
