Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club 1st XI v Thorley on Sat 18 Jul 2015 at 1.30pm
Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club Won 155 Runs

Match report A glorious day greeted SHECC for the local derby vs promotion rivals Thorley. Winning the toss skipper Nazir has no hesitation in batting as the pitch once again resembled the M1.

Openers Gleeson (12) and McGurk (20) made a quick start against the accurate bowling of Naysmith and Pack, racing along to 28 from the first four overs before both being caught within the space of 4 balls trying to keep the runs flowing. This brought Merrick and Nazir to the crease, both batted sensibly, nullifying the chirpy Thorley counter attack, picking up runs when on offer, waiting for the inevitable bad ball. Merrick was unfortunate to be stumped off of the wicket keepers pads for a well made and patient 39. This ensued the typical '1990's England' collapse with another two wickets falling cheaply, debutant Mackinlay (4) and Jacob Talbot (1) both falling to Thorley skipper, who bowled with good control showing that it's not all about pace! At 168-5 with 14 overs to go the game was in the balance. Nazir, having batted sensibly early in his innings unleashed a plethora of attacking strokes to which the Thorley bowlers had no answers to, bludgeoning his way to a masterful 128 from 96 balls. He was well supported by Sam Talbot (55 from 36) who showed maturity beyond his years, supporting Nazir and helping himself to his maiden 50 for the first team.

SHECC finished on a healthy 289-8.

Thorley started as they meant to go on, aggressively! The broad shoulders of Pack tucking into anything full or wide, the ball racing to the boundaries that have seen so many runs scored over the years! Despite the early onslaught both the opening bowlers of Turner (2-30) and debutant Mackinlay (0-25) kept things reasonably tight, Turner getting the valuable wicket of Pack who spooned up a catch that was well held by Rory McGurk at cover. After losing their main batsman Thorley never really recovered, not being able to afford time to play themselves in wickets fell at regular intervals and despite useful knocks from Mills and the inventive Sydes, were never really up with the run rate. Nazir claiming two wickets (he's going to be suffering today!), Jacob Talbot 2, Alex West 1 and veteran Peter 'pull the pin out' Fitzpatrick mopping up the tail with 3 wickets at the end. Thorley finishing on 134-10 from 31 overs.

A solid professional performance from an exciting young team, congratulations boys, the quest for promotion is back on track!
