Woodford Wells IV v Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 22 Aug 2020 at 1:00 PM
Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club Lost by 50 runs

Match report A warm and sunny (ish) day saw the second XI travel to Woodford. With Woodford competing well in the division above us, and the Hall having not directly won a game yet this year, we knew it was going to be difficult. Due to Fitzy forgetting to call neither heads nor tails during the coin toss, the Woodford skipper decided that we'd bowl first. A tight bowling partnership between Fitzy and Charlie saw our opponents on less than 50 after 16 overs. Yestyn starred before drinks, by leaping like a salmon to take a one handed diving catch off of Charlie's bowling. After 23 overs, we'd managed to restrict Woodford to 67-3, which was very impressive at this stage. Unfortunately our bowling and fielding slacked during the last 15 overs, and as a result their opener and "specialist number 6" managed to score a load of quick runs, scoring 66 and 65 respectively. Despite Will getting over-excited and knocking off the bails to appeal for a stumping every other ball, our opposition finished on 240-6. Wickets for Charlie (2), David Tilman, Dave Saker, Matt Fuller and George McKenzie, with 2 catches for Will and 1 for Yestyn. Unfortunately, due to some virus, we were denied the greatness that is, the Woodford Wells' cricket Tea, so homemade sandwiches by mum had to do. Will was forcefully made to open the batting alongside Archie Racey, who put on a respectable 64 run partnership together, until Archie was caught out in the deep on 27. Next to the crease was Josh Gleeson, he and Will put on another respectable partnership of 56 runs, until Josh too, was caught out in the deep on 18 runs. Next to go was Digger, Bowled on 1, who misjudged the length of a ball he'd usually eat up for his pre-dinner snack, but that's cricket for you. I'm sure you'll get 50 next week Mark! After 2 quick sixes and some singles, Fitzy was caught out in the deep on 15. Will, continuing his good form was bowled on 85, by the very guy he "swore he would see off" on the final ball of his spell, after being unable to hit him off the square for 8 overs. Charlie hit 2 lovely sixes and a few more boundaries, but was bowled on 24. Then Yestyn, George and Matt all contributed 5,7 and 1 respectively. We finished on 190-8, 50 runs short, but all in all a very respectable performance against higher league opposition. A massive well done to the youngsters who stepped up and played excellently. Great performance guys! And to our luck, it started raining heavily literally seconds after the last ball was bowled. A few beers after the match as journey juice (for the over 18's ), and we were off home.
