Bishops Stortford IV v Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 11 Jun 2022 at 13:00

Match report
What a game. We got so close. It was a fantastic performance by everyone. I mentioned after our May games about a resurgence. We didn’t win yesterday, but we are definitely giving it momentum.
Having elected to bat we posted 237 which was about par for that wicket. The young Stortford opening bowlers put us under early pressure and we were 9/2 from 7 overs. Elizabeth Clune taking 2 wickets in consecutive balls. This brought Gus (63) to the crease. How he changed the course of our innings. His innings was almost faultless showing excellent shot selection & finding gaps with ease. You could sense a change in ambience in the field as his innings went on as the Stortford fielders toiled in the heat and struggled to take wickets. Gus & Josh Beaumont (61) put on a fine partnership of 125 in 15.4 overs. It was an absolute pleasure to umpire for its entirety. Josh also batted very well, exerting constant pressure on the field. Peter Fitzpatrick (28) continued his fine form with the bat with some great hitting as did George (18), Freddie (19) & Paul Elby (20) adding valuable runs at the end of the innings. We had set a competitive target which would have been enough against most teams. Stortford though had their strongest batting line up of the season.
We had a game plan and it worked for the first 60 overs. Stortford were 92/3 off 20 overs. The game was delicately poised as we had been 91/2 at the same stage. However, Stortford accelerated from here and five overs could probably have cost us the game, but from experience this is how Stortford Fours have played for years with a full strength top order. I possibly could have bowled bowlers from the other ends. These tiny things can make all the difference in games that are so tight. I know the batters who were involved and the ground very well. Things were made too easy for them and I take full responsibility for this. Once again, I fell short on defensive field placings. Jay Ward and Mark Smith are two of the best batters in division two and would not look out of place in the Premier division. It isn’t often you see teams put on 155 for the third wicket in competitive games in this division . Apologies to those bowlers who did not get their full quota.
A special mention for Freddie. He only got one over and respected it was time for George to come back on and give us a chance of victory once Josh had removed Jay. Freddie’s fielding was amazing as he saved what would have been many more runs and backing up whenever he needed to. His contribution with the bat was also outstanding.
Indeed, George did remarkably swing the game back in our favour, taking two wickets in the first five balls of his second spell. Stortford were momentarily rocking, although the evergreen Graeme Sumner nurdled them to victory despite the increased tension.
We bowled well throughout almost all the innings. George was outstanding. Peter Fitzpatrick was his usual dependable self. David Saker bowled fantastically before drinks. We had the bowlers to win the game, but we had to continue to bowl well consistently after drinks and I amongst others failed to do that.
I am very proud of how the team performed. We were fantastic in the field. It was refreshing to see the younger players doing so well and having such an impact on the game.
It was a great game of cricket and we should draw confidence from this for the rest of the season. Eight bonus points should never be ashamed of.
