Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club 2nd XI v Essendon on Sat 18 Jun 2022 at 13:00
Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
We scored 206 which didn’t seem enough against a good batting side particularly with a short boundary. Daniel Hanna (61 n.o.) and Gus (50) both gave us a chance. The bowlers tried their hardest, but didn’t have enough runs to defend.
We batted well, but we always thought another 30-40 runs would be needed. We achieved some of our goals by not losing early wickets and set ourselves a good platform in the first ten overs (45/1). However, we didn’t push on at this point and 36 runs from overs 11-20 pegged us back. We need to target 100 runs after 20 overs. This will give us the opportunity to post 250+ which will always be competitive. With the batting order we had this was highly achievable. We had great hitters waiting to come in. The problem is they came to the crease too late and had less time to play themselves in. It is a fine balance, but we need to keep the runs flowing at all times. Finding singles is rarely difficult in division two and had we have done so regularly throughout the innings we would have achieved our target of 240+.
Stuart Thomas (27) scored quickly and was hitting the ball very nicely. Josh Gleeson (27) was timing some great drives and Gus (50) showed his quality by scoring at a good rate again. Well done to Gus on posting back to back half-centuries - long may his rich vein of form continue. Daniel Hanna showed his quality (61 n.o) with a great innings. Had he have been at the crease longer it could have been more destructive and we may well have secured 20 points.
Our total of 206 was never going to be enough but our bowlers gave it a go. Peter Page (8-1-28-0) bowled a phenomenal eight-over spell and George (8-0-48-3) bowled brilliantly as always. Josh Gleeson (6-0-50-2) took a key wicket before drinks and should have had two more. Peter Fitzpatrick (8-0-35-1) showed guile yet again and dismissed their opener who made a half-century. Archie Racey (3-0-24-0) troubled their batters and could easily have ended up with wickets to his name.
We are not far off the pace and I am convinced we have sufficient quality throughout the squad to turn our season around. Next week is the half-way point of the league season. By focussing on our batting our resurgence will continue. Let’s climb the ladder.
