Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club Won by 47 runs

Match report Wow, what a win!  We won the toss and our innings started off at a great pace which we managed to maintain  for most of the innings. This is the brand of cricket I have been trying to encourage all season. By continuing to play like this we will be playing in division two again next season. It was an awesome all round performance by everyone and we should all be proud of what we achieved. We need to keep it going.

The early pace was set by Gus (10) & Kevin (17). However, we lost early wickets and despite an early scoring rate of almost 10 an over, we found ourselves 66/4 after 7 overs. The batters needed to knuckle down. There were gaps in the field which the batters had exploited from the start (Matching Green only had 10) but we could ill-afford to lose any more wickets at such an early stage. 
Mark West played one of the best innings I have seen. Given the situation and what was required Mark proceeded to take control of the innings. It was a pleasure to bat with him - he showed great guidance to me when needed as we kept the tempo going. After 30 overs the score was 191.  It is not difficult to add over a hundred runs in the last ten overs of a game - 300 was possible especially in the dry conditions.  I departed at 205/5 - we had secured maximum batting points. The tail did well to bat out the overs and Frances and Aidan added some valuable runs at the end to see us up to 229/9. 260+ was probably par on that wicket. Little did we know at the time, it didn’t matter.

Frances (6-2-12-2) bowled an incredible opening spell. She bowled her usual tight line just outside off stump and was rewarded with the prize wicket of their opener, Assad, caught by Kevin at slip.  Assad has played Premier league cricket this season and scored 147 n.o last week. Frances got their number three soon after - a great catch by Laurence at backward point.  This was shortly followed by Gus taking a wicket . Matching Green were rocking & we had the self-belief to knock them over. Their other opener (who has also done well in Premier league cricket) had other ideas. We needed to dismiss him or keep him at the non-striker’s end. He scored 84 runs and would have done more damage had Peter Hanks (5-0-21-2) not dismissed him lbw with his first ball.
In between Gus took another well-deserved and vital wicket with his first ball after drinks. Gus bowled some very good balls with his leg-spin. Laurence (6-0-30-2) then bowled a full spell. Laurence bowled a great length and should be very proud of his performance. He took a great catch off Frances’ bowling and as usual showed excellent commitment in the field. Suzy (6-0-38-0) also bowled a great line and was unlucky not to take at least one wicket (I shouldn’t have dropped a relatively straightforward catch at mid-off). As ever Suzy was very strong in the field. Matt Reader also kept superbly behind the stumps.  It is nice that he has slotted into the side so well.  Both Matt and Suzy should  have a good future at the Hall.   It was nice to see Mark West (2.1-0-6-1) tempting the batters with his leg-spin at the end. Once again he deserved his wicket when Aidan Lucas took a fine catch at mid-on to seal the victory.  We showed great attitude and determination in the field and as the scores began to get tighter everybody stepped up to help close out the game.  We won by 47 runs.

Thank you to everyone that played and supported us on Saturday. I feel that everything we are working towards is finally coming together and we are all focused on  ensuring we stay in division two as best as we can.

This was a fantastic all round display. Our resurgence continues - now let’s keep it going.
