Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club 2nd XI v Sawbridgeworth III on Sat 02 Jul 2022 at 13:00
Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club Lost 228 Runs

Match report Getting a team together was a huge victory within itself. On Wednesday we had 5 players so to have 11 players by Thursday evening was a remarkable effort. Thank you to everyone who played and to those who helped to get the players. The gap above us has now been reduced to 15 points from 27 before the game. We have sufficient quality in the 2s and my target is to have clawed back this difference by early- August.

Two of us had to leave early so batting second made sense. I don’t think it made a difference to the result. Sawbridgeworth fielded two opening batters that would normally play a higher level of cricket. This ultimately put the game beyond us. Despite this it was great to see determination from all right through to the finish and for the game to be played in such excellent spirit.

We started well. Laurence Poles took a great catch off David Saker for an early wicket and 32/1 off 8 overs was also a very respectable bowling effort. Sawbridgeworth were feeling the early pressure. Even at 80/2 after 16 overs we were still very much in the game. A third wicket at 92 brought us hope, but the quality of Craig Noonan shone through and even though we had half chances to dismiss him, he controlled the Sawbridgeworth innings for 35 overs, amassing 149 runs. David Saker (6-0-25-1) bowled brilliantly (apologies he didn’t get his 8 overs), Freddie Mackenzie (6-0-46-1) bowled very well and took a key wicket. Suzy Reader (8-2-53-2) was our star bowler. Suzy bowled a great line and was rewarded for her efforts. Laurence and Millie also bowled well earning 4 overs each.

In our innings, both openers had to leave early, but we started very well. 28/0 off 6 overs was a promising start. Both batters were timing their shots and running well between the wickets. However, time was ticking and unfortunately the first wicket was a catalyst for more. We were all out for 89.

Freddie (28) batted very well. I wasn’t around for the rest of the innings, but hopefully in future matches we can work more on the discipline at the crease I referred to in our pre-match team talk.

Despite the margin of the defeat I was very pleased with the overall result given the circumstances. To take bonus points was crucial, especially as we gained an extra 10 points on the team immediately above us. When I saw the result I felt gaining 14 points from this game was very worthwhile.
