Cloghams v Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 23 Jul 2022 at 13:00
Stansted Hall & Elsenham Cricket Club Lost by 55 runs

Match report Cloghams elected to bat first and probably scored 20 more runs than they should have done. Having said that 232 was an achievable target. We only had ten players as well so we did well to restrict them.  The bowling highlight was Peter Page (7-0-39-5) who produced an outstanding second spell where he took 4-14 off three excellent overs. Congratulations to him for taking another 5-for for the Hall. Breeze (4-0–11-3) bowled himself at the right time when wickets were needed. Without those wickets Cloghams’ total may have been out of our reach. Gus, Suzy, Matt Fuller and Peter Hanks each bowled some great balls that would have all taken wickets on another day.
We just needed to get off to a good start to our innings and score at a decent run rate. As ever circa 100 runs off the first 20 overs would have set us in good stead.
A solid opening partnership of 47 between Gus (31) and Matt Reader (12) got us off to an admirable start. Gus played some lovely drives and put the pressure on the bowlers/fielders particularly as his innings went on. Matt played some nice shots and supported Gus well.
Unfortunately, the pitch was not the easiest to bat on and the ball was difficult to get away. We fell behind on run-rate at an early stage and it was always going to be difficult to turn this around. Cloghams had some accurate bowlers. Carl Steward (40) top scored in his first league game for the Hall and Breeze (34 n.o.) added valuable runs to our innings. Peter Page (19) also helped increase the run rate in the middle of the innings.
We all showed great commitment  and everybody contributed and did their best. It was great to see Aidan doing so well showing his endless enthusiasm  in the field and then adding crucial runs to help us achieve our fourth batting bonus point which was our target when he arrived at the crease.
As I have said before, 8 points is never a bad thing in defeat, but on reflection we conceded too many extras and this may well have been the difference between winning and losing. Thirty-seven runs is a high proportion of the innings total in any game.
It was great to see that once again the game was played in a wonderful spirit by both teams.
There are five league games remaining  this season and we have the chance to escape the drop to division three. The second eleven have had a difficult season with varied availability.  If we are still playing cricket in division three next season it will down to a collective Herculean performance. There is still time. We can do this.
