Chanceless Mohsin ton helps 1st XI to 411

26 Aug 2017

After our previous fixture against Birchanger had ended with a 317 run win, we were hopeful of another victory. With normal wicketkeeper and opening batsman Sam away in Liverpool, Tom Snelling was sent out to open with Mohsin after a few weeks on holiday. Unfortunately, said holiday seemed to have taken its toll on young Snelling, as he was caught after chipping one to mid wicket early on. Meanwhile, at the other end, Mohsin was enjoying using his new bat. He dispatched the ball to boundary time and time again, with some good timing. Henry had joined Mohsin at the crease after the departure of Tom, and was also hitting boundary after boundary. Both reached their hundreds, Mohsin his first for the club, Henry another ton (yawn). Not long after, Mohsin was clean bowled and this brought a series of short innings of around 30 from the middle order (Jacob yipped another half century with 41). James Brown came in to finish off the innings with an unbeaten 39 off 13 balls to take us past our previous best of 411.

Raja and Charlie opened the bowling in the second innings. Charlie was unusually expensive thanks to a very short straight boundary and slow pitch. Raja's bowling performance can be summed up by his first three balls: wide down the leg side, short and wide 4 byes down the leg side, wicket nicked to the keeper. Although maybe I'm being unfair as he did finish with figures of 3-16. Birchanger were never really in the chase, and after some short rubbish from Naz Junior, James Brown was brought on to bowl. He took his first wicket for a long time, caught at deep square leg, and then another stumped by keeper Beaumont the next ball. He finished with figures of 3-29, as we bowled Birchanger out for 170 to win by 241 runs.

While we are still mathematically in the promotion hunt, we need several results to go our way, so it looks unlikely.
